Poppy flower pods
Alright, guys. Here’s another pattern. There’s more in my sketchbook but this is the last one for now. (There’s something else I’m working on.)
This pattern is more complicated than the others (previous pattern posts: Late night pattern creation & More pattern talk). But I still used the shape tools, pen tool, and pathfinder. There was a lot of back and forth with the direct select tool to tweak anchors and handles. I also downloaded a couple tools to help with that: VectorScribe from Astute Graphics and Xtream Path from CValley. I purchased these when I was taking an Illustrator class and they’ve been useful.
A lesson learned:
One thing I’d probably do differently is leave the different shapes separate. You’ll see in the video that I combined the shapes early on. I could have made the spines/ridges(?) of the pod the same way but easier if I hadn’t already connected the stem.
See more process videos on my YouTube channel.
As I said, I have some more patterns in my sketchbook but I’m moving on to a poster idea I had. You can keep updated about that on my Instagram. I’ll do a blog post about it once it’s finished.
Get the poppy flower pods and other patterns on various items (pillows, tote bags, phone cases, etc.) in my shop.
